The Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) is a fiercely democratic, independent union that represents thousands of workers throughout BC.

https://ppwc.ca/ppwc-observes-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation-on-september-30/
Every year on September 30, the Public and Private Workers of Canada (#PPWC) marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This critical day, also recognized as Orange Shirt Day, honours the residential school survivors, remembers the thousands of innocent children who never returned home, and supports the families and communities enduring intergenerational trauma. For the PPWC, observing this day goes beyond marking a calendar. It is a solemn renewal of our commitment to social justice and human rights.

From #PPWC President Chuck LeBlanc and First Vice President Adrian Soldera: "Bill C-39 represents a direct assault on the fundamental rights of working people across Canada. By embedding sweeping Section 107 powers into the Canada Labour Code, this legislation grants a single government minister the unchecked authority to strip away a union’s Charter-protected right to strike. On behalf of the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC), we stand in unyielding opposition to this overreach."

The Crofton pulp mill, a cornerstone of the Vancouver Island economy for generations, was closed by Domtar in April 2026. More than 350 PPWC Local 2 members suddenly faced uncertainty and hardship.
The Public and Private Workers of Canada and then-National President Geoff Dawe took immediate action, producing a House of Commons petition calling on public officials to increase worker transition funding, including relocation funding, increase retirement bridge funding for workers over the age of 55, and extending employment insurance for those affected... On September 26, 2026, Cowichan-Malahat-Langford MP Jeff Kibble read the petition in the House of Commons.

The origins of Labour Day trace back to the spring of 1872, when Toronto printers took to the streets to demand a nine-hour workday. The Public and Private Workers of Canada - PPWC occupies a proud and vital place in this history. Founded in British Columbia in 1963, our union was born out of a determination to build a truly independent, democratic, and Canadian labour organization.

They focused on the need for continued advocacy for provincial policy changes to strengthen B.C.’s forest sector, while ensuring local workers affected by the Crofton pulp mill closure and the ongoing curtailment of the Chemainus sawmill have access to the training and supports they need to transition into new opportunities – whether in forestry, manufacturing, or other industries.

Are you feeling underappreciated, overworked, or stuck in a job where your effort isn't reflected in your paycheck? If you’re struggling in an unorganized workplace, it’s time to discover what true solidarity can do for your life and career.
Why PPWC? Real Value for Everyday Workers
Joining PPWC isn't just about having representation—it’s about changing the dynamic on the job floor:
* Better Wages & Financial Security: Unionized positions consistently secure higher pay rates, ensuring workers receive a fair share of the value they generate.
* Comprehensive Benefits: From extended healthcare to reliable pension plans, PPWC advocates for total compensation packages that protect you and your family.
* Health & Safety First: Every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of their shift. PPWC prioritizes rigorous workplace safety standards and provides specialized member training to tackle risks head-on.
* Improved Working Conditions: Say goodbye to unfair treatment and constant micromanagement. A union contract establishes clear rights, reasonable hours, and respectful environment standards.
Beyond individual worksites, PPWC stands at the forefront of broader economic and social justice in BC. True fairness means ensuring every worker has a voice, equal opportunity, and protection against unjust workplace practices. By organizing, working people build the collective power needed to advocate for stronger labour laws, community health, environmental stewardship, and equitable policies across our province.
PPWC is proudly member-driven, meaning democracy starts right on the shop floor—everything flows from the workers up. When you join PPWC, you aren't just signing up for representation; you're gaining a community that equips you with the tools, training, and support to stand up for your rights.
If you're tired of low pay, poor conditions, or feeling unheard, you don't have to navigate it alone. Take the first step toward fairness, security, and respect at work today.

Joining a labour union is one of the best and influential decisions a worker can make in his or her life. Unions have a long history of protecting the rights of workers, fighting for social justice and equality, and bettering the working lives of millions of Canadians.
The long-term benefits of becoming a member of a union are enormous. Statistics show that in Canada, workers have far better working conditions, an average of 29% higher pay, superior benefits and pensions, longer paid vacation time, and safer and more democratic and egalitarian workplaces.
The Constitution of the PPWC is structured to maximize rank-and-file participation in national and local union affairs. National officers are fully accountable to our union’s National Executive Board and are elected by referendum ballot.
The #PPWC believes that working people in British Columbia and throughout Canada deserve better. When people come together and want to make a difference, they isn’t anything they can’t do. As the old saying goes: “United we stand strong.”
